Does anyone know how the millions of dollars raised every year from breast cancer fundraisers (walks/runs) is spent? Do they help women that can't afford treatment?

    Monette,

As the other ladies said, each organization is different, so it is important to research the organization before donating so you know exactly where your money is going. The National Breast Cancer Foundation (the organization I work for and that created this site) provides mammograms and breast health services for women who cannot afford them. In addition, we fund education and research and work with organizations like Convoy of Hope to get resources to the people who need them the most. Over 80% of our funds go towards our programs, and we keep our administrative costs low so as to help more women in need. You can learn more about our organization at www.nbcf.org and please let me know if you have any further questions.

I had a close call couple of months ago and thankfully my lump was benign. I wanted to support and help that’s why I wanted to know where and how the money is spent :) Thank you! I will check out the link.

Monette, I always question the amount of donation money that goes to actual patient benefit and research vs. what going to "administrative cost/expenses." As part of a non-profit organizations, those specific costs have to be available to the public. If you are donating to any organization, it is always wise to see where that money is going. Every organization is different but all you have to do is ask. When I was going through breast cancer treatment, the American Cancer Society gave me a gas card to get back and forth to my treatments. They also had more help if I would have needed it. I hope this helps but yours was an excellent question! Take care, Sharon

Most hospitals offer financial assistance to those who could use some help. The help is based on an income guideline. If you or someone know need help you need to contact your hospital's business office and speak with a Patient Advocate. Its a fairly simple process to apply. I worked in a business office for 7 years. This is not a time for worry...... Focus on getting better!!! Good luck!

Everything is different. Those things in the mail that send you address labels are for admin. when you actually raise money for an event (a Walk or run) the foundation usually says what it's for. Avon walk goes to research and to fund mammograms for low income ppl. I also take part in a huge ride in mass and ALL money goes to Dana Farber cancer institute in Boston. That's where I got treatment, so I see where the money I raise goes,. Powerful...
