Learning About Breast CancerNo. I find them to be more uncomfortable than painful. It also depends on the time of the month. Your breasts are usually more tender right before your period. Try and schedule it after your period and this should help. Of all medical tests, this is the one I dread the least. It's no biggie.
Comment 2I just got one yesterday. I personally don’t find them painful, and not even that uncomfortable. My breasts are very tender and I have no problem. Plus, they are fairly quick. You’re out and about fast. Making the annual visit no big deal.

Learning About Breast CancerA mammogram is not my favorite thing to do, but I would not say it hurts. There is a little discomfort due to the pressure that is put on the breast as the plates of the mammography reader press against the breast, but the discomfort immediately goes away when the pressure if relieved.

A mammogram is like a "walk in the park" to me compared to getting a pap smear! I had a baseline mammogram done when I was 35 just because I thought it was important to get a screening done at that age. I then began to have a yearly mammogram at age 40.
I agree with Ms. Jo Ann in that the...

I agree with Ms. Jo Ann in that the pressure put on the breast is minimal and it is only for a few seconds. It is tolerable and the discomfort is worth getting a clean bill of health!

Most often breast cancer is painless, unless the tumor involves the skin or the chest wall. Any lump that is new, painless or not, should be brought to your doctors attention.

That is the problem with cancer: it is not painful except the tumor is pressing some nerve or is in as advanced stage!

I discovered my cancer because it was painful. Maybe God was showing me. I wasn't supposed to have another mammogram for ten months. It was stage 2 and aggressive. I would not have survived 10 months.

It could be growth or growing pains, but that depends on your age. If you're young, that's probably it. But if not, then it's hard to tell.
In a situation like this, having it checked out by a doctor is probably the safe thing to do.

I agree. You should have it checked out. My mother's first sign was a change in breast size but it was not followed up by her doctor. When she had her mammogram a couple of months later, they found the growth. Could have been caught sooner if they had responded to the change in breast size.
