9 out of 10 lumps are benign or non-cancerous. So, it's probably nothing. That said, I don't think it's unreasonable to go back for second opinions until you receive a satisfactory answer. I don't think you can ever ask too many questions when it comes to your health, so don't be afraid to...

I don't think you can ever ask too many questions when it comes to your health, so don't be afraid to keep asking until you hear a definitive answer. I hope this helps.
Ally, i developed the same thing a couple of years ago.

Learning About Breast CancerHi Jennifer, i know finding a lump is scary. I've been there. You're doing the right thing by having a biopsy. It's difficult waiting for the results but, just know that 80% of biopsies are benign. So keep your chin up and I'll say a prayer that you're in that 80%! Take care. :)

I agree with Donna. Never let A doc tell you it's nothing. Fight for the MRI.

But at the same time mammograms and ultrasounds unfortunately do miss seeing lumps especially if you have dense breast tissue. If you feel lumps, get your dr to schedule an ultrasound. If it doesn't show anything....an MRI will pick up anything missed. Good luck to you!

Learning About Breast CancerYes, it sounds as if your doctor is being very thorough. That's a good thing! So many things that are non cancerous can be seen such as micro calcifications, etc. Any changes in the breast need to be checked out. I firmly believe in doing self exams as well.
Comment 2To start, having 5 mammograms before 1 ultrasound is crazy. But the reason for the ultrasound is to get a more thorough look. It doesn't necessarily mean its something bad. Stay positive!!! God Bless you.

Ultrasound can usually give doctors a better look at a mass than mammograms, but it is reserved for suspicious findings on physical exam or mammogram. Certain features on the ultrasound can increase or decrease the suspicion that a mass is cancerous. If an ultrasound comes out with suspicious findings, only a biopsy (or sample of the tissue) can truly confirm the presence of cancer.
In my case a cyst was clear, but my tumor was solid on the ultrasound. When the doctor said the mass was solid I just knew. Anyway that is one of the ways they can decide if a biopsy is needed or not.

Learning About Breast CancerI completely agree with Sharon and Diana. It's important that you exhaust all avenues. Your doctors should be fighting for you to get answers to what is going on in your body.
Get a new doctor if yours isn't listening.

We found positive lymph nodes in my MRI. It's important to listen to your body. If something is hurting there is a reason.
I hope your's is benign. But, the earlier you catch it the better. Be persistent!
When mom had her yearly mammogram the only thing that show was the lump in her armpit. When they biopsied that it had "breast cancer cells". Finally after MRI they located the tumor in her breast and after her mastectomy she found out the tumor was 4.9 in size!!!!! That big and was not picked up...

So yes you need an MRI!

I was just diagnosed a couple of weeks ago after finding the lump myself during a self exam. I had just had my yearly mammogram 2 months earlier and they told me "Everything looks good see you in a year!" The oncologist said this lump could have been growning for several years and the mammograms didn't pick it up, but the ultrasound did and the MRI with contrast did also. I'm not sure a mammogram is enough anymore from what I hear on many of the tumors.
